North Melges 24 Sails:

Mainsail (AP-3)

This is our all-round design Kevlar Mainsail; Developed in the USA by Vince Brun, this sail is built in only two sail lofts Worldwide, San Diego and Gosport. Cut in North's own exclusive Clear Film Kevlar this sail comes complete and ready to race including bag, battens, sail numbers, windows, royalty label and class measurement. This sail is a little fuller than the KM-08 mainsail and as a result develops more power and is a very superior sail is chop.

Chose the AP-3 as your mainsail for outstanding speed all through the wind range. Due to the low stretch properties of the Kevlar fabric flattening out the sail in a breeze is no problem! This sail was used to win the US Nationals, Italian Nationals, French Nationals, North American Championships and the Volvo Cup to name a few! This is the preferred all round sail by the majority of top crews in the Melges 24 class.

The sail is ready to win straight out of the bag!

Mainsail (KM-8)

The KM-8 is the latest mainsail to be introduced into the North Sails armoury. This sail has been developed with the emphasis on stronger winds as the sail has more luff curve and flatter sections in the leach. This sail is really easy to use in a breeze but can prove a little tricky for some in lighter conditions and waves. For sure if the forecast is for breeze and you can get all the crew on the side this sail will have the edge. Something to add to your inventory and bring out when the breeze is strong.

For the team who are looking for that edge in a breeze the KM-8 is for them. The price includes all of the features of the AP-3 sail, including class royalty and measurement. The sail is ready to win straight out of the bag!

Jib (J-7)

The J-7 Jib is our standard Jib design that was conceived during the early part of 2004. In response to the change to Kevlar we quickly realized that the Melges 24 jibs could be a lot fuller. This was mainly due to the incredible low stretch properties of the new Kevlar fabric. This Jib design quickly replaced the J-5BK as the ideal all round Jib for International competition being fast throughout the wind range. This sail was used to win the Lake Garda regatta, Volvo Cup, Italian Nationals, French Nationals and the Worlds.

This sail is still a popular choice by many Teams but also now have the J-8 to consider. The sail comes complete and ready to race including windows, clew blocks, tell tales, battens, class royalty and measurement. The sail is ready to win straight out of the bag!

Jib (J-8)

The J-8 Jib is quite a new design that was conceived during the early part of 2005 and tested at many of the big regatta's. In fact this design took first and second at the 2005 Europeans where we decided it's development was finished and it was ready for the market. This sail is made from a lighter fabric in response to the new 4kg Jib rule and comes out just over minimum weight.

The main difference between the J-7 and the J-8 is that the J-8 is a little fuller in the entry and has slightly more leach return. We feel this sail is very well suited to our European conditions and works well as an all round design. Again the J-8 comes complete and ready to race including windows, clew blocks, tell tales, battens, class royalty and measurement.

Max Runner (VMG)

Cut exclusively in Contender Dynalite – This silicon coated fabric stands up to the damp European conditions better than any other on the market today. The North Max Runner, previously known as the VMG, is designed for running in all conditions. This spinnaker is a great all-round sail that can run deeper than any other sail on the market, yet is open enough to sail high to defend your position when necessary. Additional shaping in the luff supports a large projected area, which allows you to sail very deep and still keep the boat speed up. Because the leech of the sail is relatively open, this sail also performs well when the wind is strong or very light and forward of the beam.

Under the rules, you are allowed to have two spinnakers on board. Having the North Max Runner in combination with the North Power Zone Reacher is highly recommended for a two spinnaker program. For a one-spinnaker program, we recommend this sail as the spinnaker of choice! This sail works great in all conditions! Cut from Contender Dynalite and available in a wide range of colours, it comes complete with Spectra luff line, royalty label, class measurement and colour coded tapes.

Power Zone Reacher (PZR)

The Power Zone Reacher is designed to get you over the waves and quickly onto the plane. It is cut open in the leech with a flatter luff curve so that when you press up for speed the boat accelerates and planes without the overpowered feeling associated with a fuller luff spinnaker. This sail gets you in the power zone more quickly. The power zone is the zone where the boat is powered up and planning freely, not bound up or over heeled. We use this sail in all planing conditions and it is also very fast in light air, especially when there is chop causing the luff to become untable on fuller spinnakers. Under the current rules, you are allowed to have two spinnakers on board. Having the Power Zone Reacher in combination with the Max Runner is highly recommended for a two spinnaker program.

Cut from Contender Dynalite the sail is available in a range of colours, and comes complete with Spectra luff line, royalty label, class measurement and colour coded tapes.

Mast Pad

The North Mast Pad is designed to protect the mast from the Jib Clew blocks. Without this item the mast will have the paint knocked off in a very short time. Cut in a mix of Kevlar and Acrylic this item is light weight and slim fitting. Why not up-grade your Mast Pad to go with your new Kevlar sails?

Custom Luff Wire

The Luff Wire length is vital to good rig set up and tuning. Here at North Sails we have used the same length luff wire for the last 10 years and this length works perfectly for our sails. The head of the Jib is attached to the wire via a small shackle; this ensures that the jib sits at the same height off the deck every race. If you tie your jib to your existing luff wire now is the time to up-grade!

The bottom of the wire now comes with a pair of Harken cheek blocks pre-fitted for ease of cunningham adjustment, so the wire is ready to race.

Do not accept any luff wire for your M-24; this custom item is vital for top speed!
